the squat

Following up from last week's core training ideas, it's important to remember our best core exercises are not crunches and back extensions (although both have a place), but our core is truly activated in squats, especially overhead squats, deadlifts, and presses.

Some great tips for teaching the squat correctly -

core training

Switching gears a little bit this week...

Here's a good article about core training from the NSCA's Performance Training Journal -

It has some excellent program examples based on client goals rather than the "this looks like fun" philosophy and an interesting reference to Williamson's study on rest periods.

Might be something to think about...

training "handbook"

I would like for us to collectively develop a handbook of sorts that your clients would receive upon the first training session and then be able to keep and refer back to.

I'm thinking of something with sections on:

1.  Testing (we would have forms for all of the tests you'd like to perform, still based off of exrx.net)

2.  Nutrition (we need some consensus on what an average nutritional plan should look like)

3.  General weight training principles

4.  General cardio training principles

5.  Top ten tips for getting/staying healthy?

What are your thoughts?  Would this be useful to you or your clients?  Would this help you be and look more professional as a trainer?

What are your thoughts on the above topics?  Additions?  Changes?

Can we come to some consensus on what should and should not be included in order to keep every trainer on the same page?
